“Don’t you ever stop planting, wasting Divine Power,” Negris muttered under its breath, deciding to leave him be since intervening was useless. Ange has always disregarded its opinion on matters that could be ‘planted’.

After extracting new tissue from the snake eggs and repeating the process, the results this time were much better. Perhaps it was because he had extracted a part that contained the essence of the bloodline, and a strange snake-like creature slowly took shape.

It had a humanoid upper body with arms and shoulders, extremely thick and slender hands, but its lower half was a long snake tail, coiled up in a bundle.

The Serpent of Misfortune nodded, “Yes, don’t you know? Oh, I forgot, you are just beings of this plane, you don’t have access to the high-level stuff like the Laws of the Void.”

Angered, Negris retorted, “Must you belittle us to feel better? Keep this up and I’ll call Lightning over here, pay it to curse you out every day. Believe it or not.”

The Serpent of Misfortune shivered, glanced at Negris, and realized it wasn’t joking. It quickly forced a smile, “No, no, there’s no belittling. I was just stating a fact, consciousness can’t be cultivated.”

To Negris’s surprise, was Lightning really that persuasive? Even the Serpent of Misfortune could be intimidated?

The Serpent of Misfortune grimaced, “Why shouldn’t I be afraid? Unless you kill it, Lightning is terrifying when you can’t hide or kill it. It doesn’t just curse you, it disgusts you, it’s unbearable. If I could, I would kill it first chance I get.”

Negris and Anthony thought for a moment and nodded in agreement. Indeed, if you couldn’t kill or escape from it, Lightning’s power was too great.

Even Ange would be driven mad if he couldn’t deal with it, as Lightning would stomp fresh vegetables in front of him, or chew on grains and then spit them out on the ground.

“Kill it first thing,” Negris stated vehemently, as a consensus formed.

With the deterrent of Lightning present, the Serpent of Misfortune finally tempered its irritating speech and explained, “Consciousness is the most miraculous thing in the Void. It cannot be cultivated and can only arise out of nothing. It is the Supreme Law, with no exceptions.”

Anthony disagreed, “That doesn’t sound right. So many Undead and Holy Spirits have consciousness, and many of them are cultivated or created. If consciousness can’t be cultivated, how would they have it?”

“Do they all have it?” the Serpent of Misfortune asked.

“Of course.”

Shaking its head, the Serpent of Misfortune answered, “No, no, no. Only those with wisdom are said to have consciousness. Without wisdom, it’s merely the body’s instincts. I haven’t studied Holy Spirits, but I’ve seen plenty of Undead in your plane, and most of them lack wisdom; they just follow their body’s instincts.”

Is that so? They looked at each other. If wisdom equals consciousness, then indeed most Undead and Holy Spirits lacked consciousness and acted based on instinct.

For instance, those lower-ranking Holy Spirits would mindlessly leap into the Resting Wind until they all perished.

The only Holy Spirit with wisdom they had seen was Luna.

“What does the Supreme Law mean? Why would that be the Supreme Law?” Anthony asked.

Beings like us can partially modify some laws–like the Life Acceleration you did just now–but the Supreme Law is unchangeable, it remains the same even within the scope of Life Acceleration.”

“As to why consciousness can’t be cultivated, I don’t know. I’ve never seen anyone cultivate consciousness. The emergence of consciousness in any unnatural creation is always random,” the Serpent of Misfortune added.

Negris and Anthony exchanged skeptical glances. They couldn’t discern the truth of the Serpent of Misfortune’s words, as they had no knowledge in this area and hadn’t even known consciousness couldn’t be cultivated; naturally, they couldn’t debate it.
