Chapter 1018: Chapter 587: Lake of the Breath of Death Chapter 1018: Chapter 587: Lake of the Breath of Death “The Resting Wind will sweep across the land, choking all life and souls. If this skeleton has a soul, it will be eroded by the Resting Wind until it shatters. If this skeleton has no soul, then the Resting Wind will bestow upon it a new Soul Flame.”
“At that time, all living beings must hide underground to avoid the harm of the Resting Wind. The entire plane will become a dead land where not even a blade of grass can grow,” Kent said in a solemn tone, describing the terrifying scene after the activation of the Resting Wind. However, he was somewhat skeptical in his heart.
The others, including Gust and other Undead, looked at each other, hesitatingly said, “This… isn’t this a good thing? As long as we’re not directly blown by the wind, right? We can just hide in houses, underground, in caves, and then come out when the wind stops, can’t we?”
“Right, right, when the wind blows, we’ll sleep, and when it stops, we’ll come out. The world will become a dead land, and my people can roam freely without having to guard against those annoying magicians and humans. It sounds great,” another added.
“Exactly, I’ve been wanting to do this. If it weren’t for His Majesty holding us back, I would have already turned this plane into a dead land, a world for the departed. Those magicians would have died off long ago because they couldn’t replenish, and they wouldn’t have the chance to lord over us and throw dimming spells all day,” an undead passionately remarked.
Everyone chirped in one after another, seemingly quite dissatisfied with the Monarch’s policy.
The Undead Empire had the upper hand on the surface; they could initiate the Undead Calamity at any time, erasing all living beings aboveground. Without the land’s intelligent beings, the Sorcerer Alliance would be like water without a source, and as the existing magicians perished, the Sorcerer Alliance would naturally collapse.
Unfortunately, the Monarch forbade them from killing living beings at will and even required them to love and live harmoniously with living beings on this plane.
If it were any other force, the orders from above, if unsatisfactory, could simply be disregarded in secret, even if it’s the supreme decree from the Pope of Light; many people defied it.
However, no subject could defy the will of the Monarch; no matter how reluctant, they must obey.
Thus, one wouldn’t see the Undead slaughtering living beings. Even if such incidents occasionally occurred, investigations ultimately revealed that humans were behind them all.
Not only could they not slaughter, but in times of disaster, they had to provide relief within their capability, acting entirely like a group of nannies.
If the Resting Wind were arranged by His Majesty, wouldn’t that imply that His Majesty indeed prepared to eliminate all living beings, just waiting for the right moment to act? If that’s the case, that wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.
“This isn’t a good thing at all,” Anthony suddenly interjected.
Gust waved his hand dismissively, “Enough, enough, you want to bring up that unceasing life theory again, right? But unceasing life isn’t about permissiveness. We could confine the living creatures and still achieve unceasing life.”
“Right, right, keep them confined, rear those living beings in a few valleys, feed them swill every day, force them to reproduce. Keeping hundreds of thousands is enough; why should we let them have half of the plane?” another undead said.
Anthony quietly waited until everyone had finished speaking, then suddenly asked, “Do you know why His Majesty established the Undead Temple?”
The unexpected question baffled everyone.
Ange, Durken, Feiti, and other Little Zombies, instinctively stepped back half a step, making space, as they were accustomed to Anthony dropping bombshell theories indicating he was about to make a major move.
The others dared not guess the will of the Monarch, and after glancing at each other, they all looked towards Gust.
After a moment of hesitation, Gust tentatively said, “To accommodate people like Kent and other… idle crowds?”
Before Kent could explode, Feiti held him back — Anthony was about to make a big reveal, and now was not the time to interrupt.
“As you all know, the Soul Network and the Faith Network are two different systems. His Majesty has the more practical Soul Network, so why establish a Faith Network? Even though the Undead Temple has declined, its inheritance system has been continuous these years. Why does His Majesty want to maintain this system?” Anthony asked rhetorically, throwing out another question.
Everyone began to ponder, but it was futile as they only knew about the Soul Network, not familiar with the Faith Network. Naturally, they couldn’t grasp why His Majesty would maintain another system.
On the contrary, Kent appeared pensive, as the Great Priest and having his own people, he understood the difference between the two systems. Yet, today was the first time someone laid this issue before him.
“Why?” Kent asked instinctively.
“Because, His Majesty is immortal and Undead, but he needs to transcend the Undead,” Anthony stated definitively.
“Beyond Undead?!” Everyone was shocked to their core. Although they didn’t understand, it sounded impressive.
Before anyone could reflect deeply, Anthony continued, “Everyone has seen the Starburst Array established by the Sorcerer Alliance. The Starburst Array has been fired three times since records began, one of which struck the ground, while the other two were aimed at the Void. Do you know what they were targeting?”
“The Divine Realm, what else could it be?” An Undead spoke up.
“So, how much do you know about this Divine Realm?” Anthony asked.
“I know quite a lot, based on the tales of the heroes of the Divine Realm…” Before he could finish, Gust interrupted the Undead, turning to Anthony, “What do you mean?”
“All of our information about the Divine Realm comes from a single book, the ‘Tales of the Divine Realm Heroes’. Have you ever considered that the information in the ‘Tales of the Divine Realm Heroes’ might be incorrect?” Anthony posed another question.
“Impossible, the ‘Tales of the Divine Realm Heroes’ is His Majesty’s…” someone began to object, but then suddenly realized in mid-sentence. His Majesty had never said he wrote the ‘Tales of the Divine Realm Heroes’; these were merely assumptions, and His Majesty had never denied them.
Without waiting for everyone to ponder deeply, Anthony threw out the next question: “Whether it was written by His Majesty or not, the fact that the Starburst Array struck the Divine Realm twice is undeniable. Do you know what this means? The gods of this plane couldn’t withstand a single Starburst, but the gods of the Divine Realm withstood two and even dispatched Pope of Light and thirty million members of the Expeditionary Army…”
“What? Thirty million Expeditionary Army? Who told you that?” an Undead exclaimed in shock.
Anthony looked around hesitantly and asked, “You all don’t know about the thirty million Expeditionary Army, do you?”
Everyone turned to Gust, who reluctantly nodded, “It’s true; the Divine Realm dispatched thirty million members of the Expeditionary Army, and now the vanguard is positioned at the edge of the Broken Star Mountains.”
“Ah? Thirty million? Living beings?” All the Undead were shocked by this enormous number.
Ordinary humans, when trained and formed into formations, could each dispense with more than ten Skeleton Zombies. To deplete thirty million trained humans, the Undead Empire would need to deploy three hundred million Skeleton Zombies.
However, the human deployment of thirty million couldn’t possibly all be ordinary humans; there must be a large number of Mages, Swordsmen, Archers, Priests, Magicians, etc.
The Undead Empire could muster only three to five thousand high-order Undeads, which meant, if it really came down to thirty million versus three hundred million, the Divine Realm’s Expeditionary Army would have far more high-end combat power than the Undead Empire.
Someone hesitantly said, “If that’s the case, shouldn’t we launch the Resting Wind? This way, the Divine Realm’s Expeditionary Army wouldn’t be able to cross over.”
“No, no, no,” Anthony replied, “Launching the Resting Wind, what effect would it have on the Divine Realm’s Expeditionary Army? They can just retreat. After all, the Resting Wind has already dealt with their biggest enemy–The Sorcerer Alliance, and they don’t need to lift a finger.”
“Therefore, whether to launch the Resting Wind should be decided by His Majesty, not us. What we need to do is ensure that the Resting Wind can be activated at any time, not make decisions on behalf of His Majesty!” Anthony said forcefully.
Clang, a huge accusation was made, ‘Making decisions on behalf of His Majesty’? Gust was flabbergasted, “It wasn’t me who initiated it, I didn’t launch the Resting Wind.”
“Then why is the Breath of Death surging? The surging of the Breath of Death is the precursor to the Resting Wind because only the wind that carries a massive amount of the breath of death is called the Resting Wind; otherwise, it’s just a normal hurricane,” Anthony challenged.
“Well… that… how should I know? Shall we go down and check?”
…
“Kvada, can it really be done this way? I thought he was going to make some radical argument. Instead, he’s just planning to put a big hat on Gust and force him to take us down voluntarily. I thought it was just a prelude, but it turns out it was a big move already,” Negris, projected upon Ange, was amazed.
By throwing one explosive question after another, steering everyone’s thoughts, he silently achieved his goal. You would think he is debating the differences between two systems, but he just wanted to descend to the Eye of Eternal Silence.
Now the goal was achieved, led by Gust, everyone slowly descended along the walls of the Eye of Eternal Silence.
The breath of death continued to surge endlessly. Logically, after such a long emission, the breath of death should have been exhausted by now. The volume of the emitted breath of death was already much larger than the Eye of Eternal Silence itself.
Just then, Ange suddenly stopped at the front. Simultaneously, Gust and others, one by one, fell into a pitch-black lake made up of the Liquid of Breath of Death.
