Chapter 1761: Chapter 1761: How Can I Not Care About You?
“Who are you trying to fool?!” Younger Brother Wu roared in anger. “Sister, am I not your own brother? Even beggars are treated better than this! Everyone in the family knows about you! You must have more, so hand it over now!”
Wu Lingxi continued to eat, picking up her chopsticks again. “Even if you killed me, this is all I have, take it or leave it!”
Younger Brother Wu strode forward and flipped over the table, shattering the bowls and plates on the ground, and yelling at Wu Lingxi with a finger pointed at her nose: “Do you believe I’ll make our parents sell you off again? What trash!”
Wu Lingxi got angry as well and slammed down her bowl and chopsticks: “Go ahead! Sell me off! This is all the money there is!”
Younger Brother Wu raised his hand, about to hit Wu Lingxi.
Mr. Wu and others hurriedly intervened, fearing that the situation would get out of hand.
Younger Brother Wu, prevented from hitting Wu Lingxi, stormed into her room in a rage, tearing her bed apart but didn’t find a single coin.
Younger Brother Wu was even angrier now and came out quickly, grabbing Wu Lingxi by the collar demanding, “Where’s the money! Where have you hidden it!”
“Oh dear, let go of your elder sister this instant,” Mrs. Wu said, almost frantic. She hurriedly took out all of their coins. “Here, take it, this is all your father and I have left. Your sister probably doesn’t have any more. Otherwise, why didn’t you find even one coin when you tore her room apart!”
Younger Brother Wu immediately looked at the money Mrs. Wu handed to him. Seeing it was just over 200 silver, although still far from enough, his mood lightened slightly, and his tone softened a bit: “Mother, don’t let her deceive you! We know what kind of person she is. She always hides and hoards things, always keeping something back. She definitely didn’t give us everything at first!”
“Enough already,” Mr. Wu said, extremely irritated, “let me and your mother talk to her. You go outside. What kind of behavior is this, smashing and hitting things?”
Younger Brother Wu did not immediately leave but turned to look at Wu and Mrs. Wu: “Brother, sister-in-law, are you really not willing to contribute? If not, later on, don’t blame me for not acknowledging you!”
Mrs. Wu wanted to say that if he didn’t recognize them, then so be it, but Wu spoke to her first in a soft voice: “Although this little brother of mine is troublesome, he’s still my brother. Besides, every time there’s trouble in the village, has he ever not helped out? We’re all one family; we can’t be so absolute.”
Mrs. Wu thought it over and agreed. In the village, if you only have a couple of people on your side, you end up without anyone to rely on. No matter how disagreeable Younger Brother Wu was, he always supported them during disputes with other villagers, presenting a united front. But she was still stingy by nature, and with a pained expression, she said to Younger Brother Wu: “Little brother, I am still carrying your elder brother’s child, how are we going to live if we give you all the money?”
Younger Brother Wu immediately said, “Do you think I wouldn’t take care of you?”
Mrs. Wu reflected on this. They had indeed lived through tough times to build up a few acres of land. Younger Brother Wu had never been lazy with the farm work, and thus, though it hurt her, she let her husband take out the money.
Wu, afraid his wife might change her mind, quickly took out all the coins he and his wife had secretly saved and handed them to his younger brother.
Younger Brother Wu looked at the amount–it was just over 200 silver but still not enough.
However, since brother and sister-in-law had really taken out all their savings, Younger Brother Wu naturally held no resentment against them. This only made him resent his sister Wu Lingxi even more.
With even more hatred in his gaze, Younger Brother Wu took one last look at Wu Lingxi before striding out, but not without leaving behind a harsh parting shot–
